Quality is the foundation of Vietnam's furniture export success. With over $14 billion in annual furniture exports, Vietnamese manufacturers have developed sophisticated quality systems that meet the stringent requirements of US, EU, Japanese, and Australian retail markets.
This article takes you inside the quality control process at a typical Vietnamese KD furniture factory.
Stage 1: Raw Material Inspection
Quality starts before production begins. Incoming wood is inspected for:
- Moisture content: Must be 8-12% (kiln-dried). Measured with pin-type moisture meters at multiple points.
- Grade classification: A-grade (clear), B-grade (minor knots), C-grade (character marks). Grade determines product allocation.
- FSC chain of custody: Documentation verified for every incoming batch.
- Defect screening: Warping, cracks, insect damage, discoloration.
Stage 2: CNC Machining Quality
For KD furniture, CNC precision is critical. Quality checks include:
- First article inspection: First 3 pieces off each CNC program are fully measured against CAD drawings
- Dimensional tolerance: ±0.2mm for joint components, ±0.5mm for non-critical dimensions
- Hole depth and position: Cam-lock and dowel holes checked with depth gauges
- Edge quality: No chipping, tearout, or burning from CNC routing
Stage 3: Assembly Testing
This is unique to KD furniture production. Before mass production continues:
- Trial assembly: Random units assembled from packaged components
- Fit test: All joints must connect smoothly without force
- Hardware verification: Correct quantity and type of fittings in each bag
- Assembly time recording: Must meet target (typically under 60 minutes)
Stage 4: Finish Inspection
- Color consistency: Components matched against approved color sample board
- Surface smoothness: 320+ grit finish, no rough patches or drips
- Adhesion test: Cross-hatch tape test for lacquer adhesion
- Chemical compliance: Finish meets CARB, REACH, and target market regulations
Stage 5: Packaging Quality
- Component count: Every item in the carton verified against packing list
- Drop test: Random cartons dropped from 60cm (corner, edge, flat)
- Stack test: Cartons must withstand 5-high stacking
- Instruction review: Assembly manual matches actual product
