The 12-Point Supplier Verification Checklist

β 2. Factory vs. Trading Company
This is the #1 distinction. Many "suppliers" on B2B platforms are trading companies that add 15β30% markup without adding value. How to tell:
- Factory: Has production equipment, workers on the floor, raw materials in stock
- Trading company: Has a showroom or office only, sources from multiple factories
- Test: Request a factory visit. Legitimate manufacturers welcome visits.
β 3. On-Site Factory Visit
There is no substitute for physically visiting the factory. During a visit, assess:
- Production lines and equipment condition
- Number of workers and skill levels
- Raw material storage and sourcing
- Quality control area and testing equipment
- Finished goods and sample room
- Overall cleanliness and organization
β 4. Production Capability Assessment
Can this factory actually make YOUR product? Verify they have:
- The right machinery for your product type
- Experience with similar products (ask to see past production)
- Sufficient capacity for your order volume

A factory that has exported to your target market before understands packaging requirements, compliance standards, and documentation. Ask for their export history and container loading experience.

Does the factory have:

- Final inspection before packing?

- A dedicated QC team or staff?

Depending on your product and market, look for: ISO 9001, FSC (wood), BSCI/SA8000 (social compliance), HACCP/BRC (food), CE/UL (products), organic certifications.
β 8. Financial Stability Indicators
While you won't get financial statements, look for:
- Factory investment in new equipment
- Stable workforce (not hiring and firing seasonally)
- Multiple international buyer relationships
- Clean, well-maintained facilities
β 9. Communication Quality
Can the factory communicate clearly in English? Miscommunication is a leading cause of quality issues. If language is a barrier, consider working through a sourcing agent.

Ask for references from international buyers. Contact them to ask about quality, delivery reliability, and communication.
β 11. Sample Quality
Order a sample before committing to production. The sample quality indicates what the factory is capable of at their best. If the sample isn't good, production will be worse.
β 12. Contract & Payment Terms
Professional suppliers will accept standard payment terms (30/70 T/T) and sign a clear contract covering specifications, delivery, quality standards, and dispute resolution.
